Chelsea roar back to beat Real Betis in UEFA Conference League final
Manuel Pellegrini's enterprising Betis caught the favourites cold in Poland through an early goal from Abde Ezzalzouli but Enzo Maresca's team were a changed side in the second half. Two goals in five minutes changed the complexion of the game, with man-of-the-match Cole Palmer creating both openings for Enzo Fernandez and Nicolas Jackson. Substitute Jadon Sancho made the game safe in the 83rd minute, finishing from an tight angle and Moises Caicedo added gloss to the scoreline. It means Chelsea become the first club to win the full set of Champions League, Europa League, Conference League and the now-defunct Cup Winners' Cup. It is also the first silverware for the club since Todd Boehly's consortium took over from former owner Roman Abramovich in 2022, following an era of unprecedented success for the club. After a bright start from both sides, Betis broke the deadlock in the ninth minute through Ezzalzouli, who scored the goal against Fiorentina that took his side to the final. Malo Gusto lost the ball in midfield and Betis surged forward. Captain Isco produced a clever pass to find Ezzalzouli on the edge of the box and the Moroccan drilled a left-footed shot across Filip Jorgensen. Minutes later Marc Bartra tried his luck from distance as Betis pressed for a second, but this time Jorgensen was equal to the task, producing a flying save. Urged on by their massed ranks of fans at Wroclaw stadium, Betis went close again when Johnny Cardoso's shot from inside the box was deflected behind by Benoit Badiashile, with Chelsea clinging on. The Premier League side were enjoying the bulk of possession but struggling to create meaningful chances, with Betis defending well and Isco, a five-time Champions League winner with Real Madrid, pulling the strings. As half-time approached Betis goalkeeper Adrian raced off his line to deny Enzo Fernandez but Chelsea went in at half-time goalless. Palmer magic Maresca brought on Chelsea captain Reece James for the struggling Gusto at the break. The Betis boss was forced a change when goalscorer Ezzalzouli was forced off, with Jesus Rodriguez coming on to replace him. Chelsea were level in the 65th minute following a fine move down the right after Cole Palmer produced a fine cross to pick out Fernandez. The midfielder got between two defenders to head the ball down and past Adrian. Suddenly Chelsea's tails were up and the fans behind the goal were in full voice. In the 70th minute Palmer produced some magic on the edge of the box before producing a delightful cross which hit Jackson's chest and went in. Jackson should have scored a second goal but a heavy touch allowed Adrian to gather. But Sancho made it 3-1 when he combined with fellow substitute Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Caicedo added a fourth. Victory for Chelsea breaks an astonishing cycle of wins for Spanish teams. Taking into account World Cups, European Championships, Champions League and the UEFA Cup/Europa League, of the previous 27 men's finals involving Spanish teams, all 27 had had Spanish winners. Four Spanish club sides had been defeated in that time, but in all cases by fellow La Liga sides. Earlier, the centre of Wroclaw was packed with fans from both clubs, with green-and-white clad Betis fans outnumbering their English rivals.

Sabalenka steamrolls into French Open third round
The three-time Grand Slam winner has dropped just five games at Roland Garros so far this year as she bids to reach the final in Paris for the first time. Sabalenka conceded a surprise early break of serve in the third game but quickly rallied to win the opener. The Belarusian then stormed into a 4-0 lead in the second set as she proved too powerful on Court Suzanne Lenglen for her Swiss opponent. "She started really well, and I'm really super happy that when I was down 1-3 (in the frist set) I held my serve," Sabalenka said. "And I think after that game I kind of like felt a bit stronger and I found my rhythm and I came back in the match and won. "It was tricky. She's a tricky opponent. Very great tennis, and super happy to get through." Despite the one-sided scoreline, Sabalenka said it was not as easy on court as it might have seemed. "I think she started really well, you know, like the rhythm was off. I couldn't really adjust to the ball. I didn't have my rhythm. I didn't really serve well. I mean, honestly, like, nothing worked well for me," she said. "And that's what I said, like, I'm really glad that I was able to kind of like step in and hold my serve. "You know, the scoreboard looks really easy, but it wasn't. She's tricky. She makes you work for every point and with a lot of running." Sabalenka will face Olga Danilovic in the next round, after the 34th-ranked Serb fought past former world number seven Danielle Collins in three sets. The pair have only ever met once before, with Sabalenka emerging victorious in straight sets in the Madrid Open qualifiers in 2018. But the now 27-year-old three-time Madrid champion insisted that eight years later the slate between her and Danilovic was blank. "We played long time ago. Was what, 2018, they told me on court. I wouldn't even watch that match, because we are completely different players," Sabalenka said. "Today both of us improved a lot, and she has been through injuries and she's coming back. I saw her matches in Madrid this year, a little bit in Rome, and I can say that, yeah, she's playing great tennis. So am I.

Sweden's Mellberg fired as coach of MLS St. Louis City
The move, revealed late Tuesday night, came after City had started the MLS campaign with two wins and five drawn in 15 matches, leaving the club on 11 points and 14th in the Western Conference. St. Louis have netted only 11 goals so far this season, third-worst in the league. Mellberg, 47, was hired last November after leaving Swedish side IF Brommapojkarna. His playing career as a defender included stops at Aston Villa, Juventus and Villareal. "The decision to part ways with Olof goes beyond just results," said St. Louis City sporting director Lutz Pfannenstiel. "We've analyzed the team's performance across a number of factors, including the need to execute against a style of play that led to the team's initial success and has been part of our DNA for four years. "We have certain standards we need to meet and believe a coaching change was necessary to improve our overall performance and return to a winning culture. Our fans deserve a better performing team and we intend to give them one." Critchley, from England, guided the top City development club to six wins and a draw in 11 starts this year with 20 goals.
